Victoria Falls
One of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, the Victoria Falls is one of the most spectacular world heritage
sites on Earth.Discovered by David Livingstone in 1855, the
Vic Falls is the largest curtain of falling water in the world
and one of Africa's top tourist attractions. It is located
where the Zambezi River drops into the Batoka Gorge between
Zimbabwe and Zambia and is two kilometers (about one mile)
wide, dropping some 108 meters (335 feet).
We design custom tours and safaris to the Victoria Falls & South & East Africa.
A fine spray is produced by the Falls
which can be seen as a misty cloud from almost 80 kilometers
(about 50 miles) away. It is this phenomenon that gave the
Falls its local name: Mosi-Oa-Tunya, which literally means
"the smoke that thunders." The spray also creates spectacular
rainbows that can be seen from all angles giving the Victoria
Falls its magical appearance.
The rain forest on the
cliff opposite the Victoria Falls is protected by the Victoria
Falls National Park and is one of the few places on the
Zimbabwean side in which you will find no commercial
distractions. Its dense tropical vegetation thrives on the
spray thrown out by the Falls and visitors can take walks
through the forest to viewing points for the Falls.
The
town of Victoria Falls is a few minutes' walk from the falls
and tourists can buy African curios, art and souvenirs there.
It is also the hub for tourist information and
activities.
Apart from the Falls itself, people also
visit the Victoria Falls for wildlife viewing and a range of
adventure activities such as white water rafting,
elephant-back safaris and bungee jumping.
