Blyde River Canyon

The 26 km long canyon sculpted by the Blyde River is one of the most awe-inspiring and majestic sights in the country.

There are several viewing sites along the edge of the gorge offering spectacular views of the peaks known as the Three Rondavels, Mariepskop and the river 600m below. Animal and birdlife abound in the gorge. For hikers the 30km, 3-day Blyde River Canyon Hiking Trail is most exhilarating and rewarding. Hikers on the Belvedere 5-hour day walk can visit the Belvedere hydro-electrical power station (1911-1972) in the canyon - permits to be obtained from Bourke's Luck Potholes. The awesome power and deafening roar of the Dientjie Falls can be experienced on a marked trail, but beware of slippery rocks.

Bourke's Luck Potholes occur where the strong-flowing Treur River is abruptly halted by the solid rock formations at its confluence with the Blyde River, near the head of the Blyde River Canyon. Rapids and whirlpool movements occur in the stream. Over millions of years, water-borne sand and rock have been caught up in the whirlpools and have scoured smooth-sided, cylindrical potholes in the river bed. Bourke's Luck was named after Tom Bourke who recognised the gold potential of the potholes. Organised deep-level mining continued here until the late 1950s. A stay here recharges the body and soul, and other beauty spots of Mpumalanga are within easy distance: Bourke's Luck Potholes, the many waterfalls, Pilgrim's Rest, God's Window and the Echo Caves.
