Pniel

A modest village on the banks of the Dwars River in the Drakenstein Valley.

Pass through Pniel as one travels from Stellenbosch to Franschhoek via the scenic Hellshoogte Pass. Silhouetted by the Simonsberg Mountains in the west and the Hottentots Holland Mountains in the east, this peaceful town with its close-knit community is well worth a visit. When the slaves in South Africa were emancipated in 1834, a philanthropic organisation was concerned with the well being of former slaves who had no fixed abode. Subsequently land was purchased and a mission station founded in 1843. Rev. Johan Frederick Stegman was the first missionary of Pniel, and served his community from 1825 to 1910 as spiritual and secular leader. Today the United Congregation Church still stands at the centre of daily life of the mostly coloured community of the town.
