Physical Features

The western half of the country, comprising the Great Karoo, Bushmanland and Namaqualand, is a sparsely populated semi-desert. These areas cover most of the Northern Cape, the north-western sections of the Western Cape and the north-eastern sections of the Eastern Cape.

The Free State, southern Gauteng, eastern North West Province and the western portions of Mpumalanga are covered by extensive natural grasslands at elevations exceeding 1000 metres. The northern sections of Gauteng, the Limpopo Province and the eastern sections of Mpumalanga are covered in extensive bush and tree landscapes and are home to most of South Africa’s most prominent wildlife areas.

The coastal regions of KwaZulu Natal are characterised by thick coastal forests, where these have not been disturbed by agriculture, magnificent sandy beaches and in the north, the most southerly coral reefs in the World. The interior of KwaZulu Natal consists of broken hills covered in bush and trees and sections of open grassland. The jagged rim of the Drakensberg Mountains, rising to elevations in excess of 3000 metres, forms the escarpment between the sub-tropical coastal belt and the temperate high-elevation grasslands of the interior. The Drakensberg stretches from the northern sections of Northern Province, through Mpumalanga, along the border between KwaZulu Natal and Lesotho and into the northern sections of the Eastern Cape and are often covered in snow during the winter months.

Magnificent natural forests are found along the narrow coastal strip of the Western and Eastern Cape between George and Port Elizabeth, where the forested mountain slopes sweep down into the sea. The coastal belt of the Eastern and Western Cape is home to unique fynbos (fine bush) vegetation and is the smallest of the five plant kingdoms in the World. This area is home to an unrivalled number and variety of spectacular flowering plants, unmatched anywhere else on Earth. Numerous and spectacular mountain ranges separate the coastal fynbos regions of the Eastern and Western Cape from the dry interior of the Great Karoo.
